The game tells the previously unknown story, shedding new light on the series.“Aliens: Colonial Marines download” offers a campaign including eleven missions which you can accomplish solo or in co-op. When playing on split screen, two players can take part. When you are playing online, four people can cooperate. The developer designed the missions to fit in the series as much as possible – they show characteristic locations, refer to well-known issues and offer the players equipment they know. The weapons include flamethrower or a smartgun detecting enemies. An important element is a motion detector playing distinctive sound when targets are approaching.The game includes all the characteristics xenomorph subspecies – from relatively small but dangerous facehuggers to the strongest mutations.

So just this past weekend, both Aliens vs. Predator (2010) and Aliens: Colonial Marines were on sale together in an 'Aliens Collection' pack for $7.49 on Steam. Both are titles I've always been at least curious about, having played Aliens vs. Predator 2 many years ago and greatly amused by all the bugs and humorous glitch compilations of Colonial Marines. After doing some quick reading up on ACM to see that it had indeed been patched since it was released in February of 2013, I decided, eh, why not?

For the cost of a cheeseburger combo, it should be interesting to see how these two compare in 2015.Now, this is purely from a gameplay perspective. This is also my first time playing either game. The storylines, continuities, characters, voice acting, etc. Would make for a whole other discussion, so I'll leave that out for now.

I've put a few hours into each game so far and these are my observations:Aliens: Colonial Marines.Very much a console shooter. Everything about it feels like they were attempting to emulate popular shooters like Call of Duty and Halo.

Split

Not that this is necessarily a bad thing. Playing it with a controller feels very natural.Definitely more arcade-oriented. There are scoreboards shown after each mission letting you know how well you did, and you can even check your score and your teammates' score at any time through the level.Gameplay against the aliens is reminiscent of Left 4 Dead in the sense that you're in a small group of people fending off swarming Xenomorphs coming in from all directions. Imagine a cross between the typical L4D zombie hordes and slightly clumsier Hunters that can lunge and pin you down if they get too close.Gameplay against the mercenaries is a lot simpler.

In fact, imagine that you're fighting the clumsy, inept Marines from the original Halo 1 and you'll have a good idea of what it's like fighting these guys.Weapon customization is an interesting touch. Gives more of an incentive for ranking up and trying new things throughout the missions.The motion tracker is a separate object that must be held up to view. As you do this, you're more vulnerable as you're no longer aiming with your weapon and it must be put away before you're able to properly fire again. This makes for some interesting gameplay as you're forced to either give up defense for more situational awareness or sacrifice situational awareness for the ability to fire your weapons.The graphics are not as bad as they were when the game was first released.

A patch apparently improved the texture quality, lighting, and other details throughout the game. That said, it still looks like what you'd expect of an Xbox 360 game running on PC. I usually don't mind a little film grain but the film grain added in the patch is a bit excessive. Thankfully it can be disabled in the options menu. Shadow texture quality is low/blocky even on max settings.There are a number of mods to improve graphics quality (SweetFX, enabling DX11, etc.) as seen in, but for the sake of this comparison, I'm only running the base version of the game.AI appears to be much improved over the initial release.

That's not saying much, though. Mostly that just means the AI is more functional/competent, although I've still seen marines get stuck on terrain and seem to run in place, mercenaries blatantly facing the wrong way in firefights out in the open, and Xenomorphs can actually jump through you or on top of you, resulting in much confusion and/or swearing in surprise as their limbs start flailing through the screen.Collision detection is iffy. Sometimes you can walk right through your teammates and vice-versa.

Other times they can be difficult to get around and even momentarily block your path. There are also numerous invisible walls blocking off entire sections of levels. So far the most blatant has been an entire massive corridor in the ship towards the end of the second level.There are some clearly bugged levels, with gaps and holes in the geometry allowing you to see the background in some parts. This is particularly noticeable on the second level (this level in particular seems to have a lot of issues), as parts of the ceiling appear to be hovering above the rest of the sections. At best this is visually jarring; at worst it can slow the game down by forcing it to render unnecessary things.Even on a PC with a GTX 970, an FX-8320, and 16 GB of DDR3 1600 RAM, there are sections where the framerate inexplicably drops into the 45-fps range.

I can only surmise that it is due to bugs in the geometry and poorly optimized coding.Sound effects and music are very fitting for an Aliens game. In terms of atmosphere, A:CM does a decent job recreating or conveying an atmosphere reminiscent of the films.Despite the glaring visual disparities, bugs, and silly AI, I still have fun playing the game. It's not great, but it's definitely not the worst, nor is it as bad as it was originally made out to be when it first released. The patch helped alleviate a lot of game-breaking issues to turn this into a serviceable game. I personally dislike the sections of fighting only mercenaries, but thankfully the experience becomes more dynamic from the third level onward when aliens and mercenaries are mixed together, allowing for three-way confrontations.

It does tend to get repetitive at times, however.This game seems like it's much more fun with co-op. Being able to play the game with friends can turn otherwise frustrating or difficult sections into challenging and amusing romps.I would say it's worth the $4 I spent on it.Aliens vs.

Predator (2010).First off, screenshots do not do this game justice. Even for a title from 2010, the graphics are sharp, much sharper than A:CM in my opinion, especially since this one supports DX11 right out of the gate.

While the character models may not be the most detailed and their animations can appear fairly stiff at times, the textures and lighting more than make up for it.Everything looks worn and gritty, just as one would expect in the Aliens universe. The shadows are superb and greatly enhance the atmosphere. Gore details are brutal, with corpses dangling from the ceiling glistening from your flashlight, or any time you mangle someone playing as the Predator or the Xenomorph.Gameplay-wise, this one feels more like a classic PC shooter, reminiscent of previous AvP titles.

There is no ADS (aim-down-sights) like there is in A:CM, but this has not been an issue for me at all. Melee feels responsive and effective, even overpowered in the case of the Predator.

You can block attacks and follow up with counters to knock down attackers, which I find to be pretty fun. It's especially useful playing as the Predator and makes you feel like a badass as it allows you to quickly pick up the attacker and brutally rip their head off, break them over your knee, or impale them on your wrist blades.While walking/running animations can look stiff, combat animations are very fluid, whether you're playing as a marine, a Predator, or a Xenomorph. So far I think I've had the most fun playing as the Predator, as I never grow tired of those execution animations.By far the most interesting gameplay comes from playing as the Xenomorph. You can seamlessly transition from floor to wall to ceiling, while your crosshair denotes which direction the floor is to help keep you oriented. The FOV is altered to give you a much wider range of vision, with screen effects to make it feel appropriately alien as you crawl through levels. You're also extremely fast, making certain sections feel frenetic as you scurry along with other Xenomorphs wrecking havoc.Playing as a marine feels like a classic FPS. You can carry three weapons at a time (one of which is always your pistol sidearm.) Weapons have an alternate fire, whether it's burst fire, launching a grenade, or similar.

Your health is in segments that regenerate over time, but if you lose one segment, you need a health pack or stimpack to restore it. In addition to a flashlight, you can toss flares to help spot things in the dark. You can sprint as well, which is sometimes necessary and encouraged throughout the levels. Your motion tracker is constantly shown as part of the HUD, unlike A:CM, which requires you to hold it up to view.Playing as a Predator feels like a cross between a stealth and melee/slasher game.

Split

You can cloak at any time, jump to various ledges, walls, or rooftops, and lunge down at targets to strike them. Imagine the Energy Sword in Halo as a regular means of attack. You have other weapons at your disposal as well, such as a ridiculously overpowered shoulder-mounted plasma cannon that pretty much one-shots anything if you charge it enough, although it requires you to drain power sources to keep using it, and proximity mines, which do exactly what you think they do.

Hand-to-hand combat plays a much larger part, where you have a fast attack (good for initial strikes and counterattacks) and a heavy attack (useful for breaking a target's defensive stance.) When you knock an enemy down, you can grab them to perform a gruesome execution which usually involves ripping their head off in some manner. However you're more vulnerable as you do this. You can heal using energy crystals, similar to the marine's stimpack.

You can use a distraction tactic to select targets and draw them away from allies to get to them easier.Playing as a Xenomorph is definitely more of a stealth game. You try to stick to the shadows as much as possible, and your crosshair inverts to let you know when you're in shadow enough to prevent yourself from being spotted. You can hiss in order to draw targets toward you. You have a fast melee attack similar to the Predator's, as well as a heavier tail-stabbing attack, again useful for breaking a target's defensive stance. Your health regenerates over time, but you can heal faster by biting into the head of a victim.Even though it doesn't seem to be mentioned on the Steam Store page, this game has full controller support, but it must be enabled in the options menu first.So far the environments in AvP feel much more varied than A:CM in terms of color, lighting, indoor-outdoor settings, and so on.At the end of each level, you're given the option to either continue on that particular campaign or switch over to any of the others, which is a very welcome feature. This means if you play through a level as a marine and want to try something different once you've finished that level, you can very easily transition over to playing as a Predator or Xenomorph without having to go back to the main menu first.While A:CM isn't scary at all (may make you jump every once in a while) AvP definitely aims to have more of a horror atmosphere, at least from the marine's perspective. Wandering through the environments as a lone marine can be eerie or downright disturbing at times, especially if you're playing with headphones (would highly recommend) and can hear all the little noises, groans, mumbles, clanks, sputters, and sometimes even creepy Android laughter.

When you're with other marines, know that they can definitely be killed abruptly, leaving you alone and facing an onslaught of aliens at any time.This game runs silky smooth with everything maxed out. Solid 60 fps everywhere. Despite it being a five-year-old game, the graphics have held up quite well in my opinion.Things to Take Away from Both.Both games have excellent sound design. Aliens: Colonial Marines might have slightly better sound design than AvP, mostly based around the gun sound effects.A:CM aims to stay closer to the movies in terms of environments and whatnot. AvP strays a bit from the iconic bleak looks of the Aliens franchise for more level variety, but it still fits the universe well enough in my opinion.AvP has a more classic feel with the FPS aspect whereas A:CM goes for a more 'modern' feel. If you've played CoD, Halo, or similar in the past five years, you should feel right at home with the A:CM control scheme and gameplay. AvP may be a bit more jarring if you've grown used to ADS, crouching, or similar (you can't actually crouch in AvP for some reason) but it's easy to make the adjustment, even more so if you've played previous AvP titles.Graphically, I actually think AvP is superior.

Those textures and that solid DX11 support and excellent lighting/shadows bump it up a few notches despite minor qualms with animation stiffness and other slight issues that cause it to feel more dated. Meanwhile, A:CM just looks more dated due to its lower-resolution textures.Both of these games are very linear. Don't expect to get to explore an open world in either of these. You're pretty much always being funneled toward one direction in all the levels as you progress through the games. Again, if you have no issues enjoying classic console games like the original Halo or the classic AvP 2, this shouldn't be a problem. Neither A:CM or AvP are looking to particularly innovate in this area.

There are still plenty of hidden areas to find/explore in both games, along with hidden items and collectibles.AvP feels more atmospheric than A:CM.This should be obvious, but you're stuck playing as a marine in Aliens: Colonial Marines unless you jump over to Versus mode and play on the Aliens side. Your character in A:CM has a voice and often talks/interacts with other characters throughout the game. Your marine character in AvP does not. In AvP, just to clarify, you can play as a marine, a Predator, or a Xenomorph, and each has its own distinct storyline/campaign.A:CM has some solid weapon customization. AvP does not.A:CM is by far a more average shooter experience. AvP, although older, feels more dynamic thanks to all the different ways you can play the game.ConclusionI believe AvP is underrated, especially when compared to newer titles like A:CM. Both are fun.

Both have their own appeal. If you're a fan of the Aliens franchise, I would recommend at least checking these titles out.

I wouldn't spend more than $10 on either of them, however; AvP because it's from 2010; A:CM because, well, it's just average in every way besides maybe the sound design. I'm glad I was able to get my hands on them both for $7 during a sale. I may try some of the graphics mods for A:CM later and see how much of a difference it makes.

I've also read that there's a local split-screen mod in the works for A:CM, which by itself would make it far more appealing, as I greatly enjoy split-screen and wish the PC had more split-screen-friendly titles.I hope this has been informative. I also think colonial marines wasn't as bad as people think.I do recall avp being more fun overall just due to variety of gameplay offered by the 3 different species.Colonial marines just felt like a rather ok shooter, but in my mind it's neither worse nor better than most shooters out right now In the gameplay area. This includes the much loved wolfenstein ( made by team members of one of my fave devs, but honestly the gameplay was pretty standard and while fun, was not particularly as fresh as I was hoping ).I really wanted the a:cm multiplayer to be good as I have wanted a solid gritty SCI fi themed mp with l4d gameplay very badly.

I heard it was fairly lack luster and never tried it. I can't believe how good Aliens vs. Predator looks on PC. I originally played it on console back in 2010. It honestly has some of the best texture work I've seen in any game. Animation-wise, I don't think any game can beat the look of the Aliens as they crawl along the ceiling, it is just perfectly done.

I normally don't turn motion blur on in games but I highly recommend it in this game. I can't describe why I like it in this game but just try it on for yourself.I was also impressed by how the Alien's hands dynamically grip over protruding surfaces. This is observable during the first time you gain control over the Alien and are given the opportunity to climb onto the ceiling.In terms of quality and overall game design, I would rank AvP (2010) second behind Alien Isolation. Keep in mind both of these games fall into two different genres.

Oh yeah, I know I mentioned the animations are a bit stiff in some places, but I was mainly referring to the marines. The Xenomorph animations are excellent! I first noticed the dynamic hand placement when I first killed one of the scientists and crawled over his body, realizing that the hand placement would change based on where it was on the floor or the body. Like the alien would lift its hand up from the floor and place it on the guy's chest if I moved over him.I also left the motion blur on in AvP.

It was just subtle enough to enhance the visual style rather than distract from it, and I think it adds to the sense of speed for playing as a Xenomorph for sure. I found that Aliens versus Predator Classic 2000 was way more fun than the new games. You should give it a shot maybe. The graphics might kinda kill it for you though. What makes 2000 stand out for me was that it felt way more action packed / longer than than AVP 2010. I think they threw more enemies at you and there were little challenges that unlocked bonuses.For example 'LANDOFTHEGIANTS: Makes you very small. To acquire LANDOFTHEGIANTS, you must defeat the fourth Marine level, Orbital, using less than 20 shots.'

Or 'TRIPTASTIC: Causes the screen to be blurry, jittering, and rainbow. To acquire TRIPTASTIC, you must defeat the second Predator bonus level, Escape, with 10 civilian trophies.' 2000 was more like a fun arcadey action game like Doom, the campaign was fun on its own and the unlockables gave it a lot of replay value. Coming from that AVP 2010 just felt kinda slow, bland and short. 2010's graphics are. 10 years better and multiplayer was okay. But other then that it just wasn't as fun as it could have been.
